Playground standards explained

Start here

Which standard applies to your project is decided by where the equipment will be installed, not by what it is made of. Europe uses EN 1176 for play equipment, EN 16630 for outdoor fitness and EN 15567 for commercial rope courses; the United States uses ASTM F1487, ASTM F3101 and ACCT respectively. These are different standards with different numerical requirements, and compliance with one does not imply compliance with another.

A note on what these pages are

These guides are written to help buyers and specifiers understand which standard applies to their project and what it requires. They are not a substitute for the standards themselves, which are published by CEN, ASTM International and ACCT and should be obtained from the issuing body. Standards are revised periodically; the review date is shown on each page.
